Author: E. Lockhart
Genre: Young Adult
In a Snapshot: Frankie Landau-Banks, a 15 year-old student at the prestigious Alabaster boarding school, experiences her sophomore year and discovers a new interest stemming from her school’s history: a secret society called the Basset Hounds.
Why I picked it up and why I couldn’t put it down: The Disreputable History was a recommendation based on its close thematic relationship to John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars. The story proved interesting, supporting an intelligent cast of characters as well as balancing teenage adventure.
Who would like this: Readers that have read and enjoyed a John Green work because of the character dynamic would also enjoy E. Lockhart’s boarding school escapades.
A Favorite Quote:
(Basset Hound Oath)
“Atop the crown of Alabaster,
Bind it tight with sticking plaster.
Look to the west, boys;
Look to the books, men!
History is our guide!
Keep the secrets, tunnel under,
Climb the heights, our pack defend.
The Basset is a hardy beast,
We vow our loyalty to the end.”
